As Shamwari celebrates its 30th Anniversary, we would like to pay tribute to the staff who have been loyal throughout the years and have helped shape Shamwari into what we are today.

This week’s tribute is Lucky Khumalo.

His story started in 1989, even before Shamwari officially opened to guests in 1992. As we continuously acquired land, he witnessed species such as black rhino, elephant, lion, and leopard being reintroduced. He was one of our first guides and after many years, he moved over to lodge management and is currently the assistant maintenance manager.

He has many incredible stories to share and some of his greatest moments were meeting legends such as Dr. Ian Player, one of the world’s greatest conservationists, and golf icon Tiger Woods, who gave him a lesson in the sport and ignited his love for it.

It is Lucky’s belief that we respect humanity and do the best we can in life. After 33 years, Lucky regards Shamwari as his first-born child and is grateful that we have grown strong enough from our initial inception to survive tough times such as the recent Covid-19 pandemic.

We certainly are proud to have Lucky as part of our Shamwari Family.
