This World Water Day, we thought we’d share a few tips to be water-wise when travelling through our beautiful country. It’s important to stay hydrated while on safari, however every drop of water counts.

Here are a few water saving tips:

  • Don’t leave the tap running while brushing your teeth as this can save up to six litres of water per minute. When shaving, try not filling the basin, this leads to a significant reduction in water wastage.
  • An eight minute shower uses about 120 litres of water. Try and keep the time that you spend in the shower short. If you are travelling with your partner, spice up the romance by sharing the shower. As the saying goes, “Save Water. Shower with a friend!”
  • Invest in some hand sanitiser to save from having to use water and soap. As magical as this invention is, it does have the tendency to dry out your hands so get some lovely hand cream to keep your skin moisturised.
  • Buy some dry shampoo and scented hair spray to prolong the time between washes, given the water crisis.
  • Travelling is thirsty work but it takes up to six times as much water to produce bottled water, than is in the actual bottle. Use a reusable water container and fill up as needed.
  • After a long day of travelling or after a game drive, when your water has become hot, rather top the water up and leave it in your room’s bar fridge than throwing it away. Or if you would prefer to throw the water out, rather use it to water a plant instead of wasting this precious natural resource.
  • Make sure that you close any taps you may use properly. Check before you leave that there is no dripping during your stay at your respective accommodation. A dripping tap can waste as much as one litre of water per hour! If you see dripping taps in the lodges where you stay while on safari, please inform management as every drop counts.

We need to do everything we can to save this precious resource and by following these tips, you’re setting a great example of how to be a conscientious and water-wise tourist.
