This World Giraffe Day (21 June), we’re shining a light on one of Africa’s most graceful icons, often admired, but quietly in decline. While rhinos and pangolins headline conservation news, giraffes have lost 30% of their population in the past 35 years, with just 117,000 remaining in the wild (*Giraffe Conservation Foundation)

The threats? Habitat loss from farming and development, poaching, and a surprising one, lack of awareness. As Joe Cloete, CEO of Shamwari Private Game Reserve, shares, giraffes play a vital ecological role, shaping vegetation and supporting entire ecosystems. Yet they’ve received less conservation attention, until now.

🌍 Global Big Day 2025 | A Celebration of Birds Around the World 🐦

While much of the world buzzed with excitement on May 10th for Global Big Day—an annual 24-hour birding event hosted by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, our team of expert guides set off at first light, ready to uncover the avian wonders hidden across our reserve.

Armed with Swarovski Optik binoculars (a game-changer in the field), and fueled by hot coffee and early morning birdsong, we ventured out into the crisp, nearly-winter air. Migration season may be behind us, but the bush was still alive with calls, colors, and wingbeats.

By sundown, we had tallied 120 species, a remarkable number considering the seasonal stillness. Every sighting was a reminder of nature’s quiet resilience and beauty.

Global Big Day is more than just numbers. It’s a global initiative to gather valuable data for scientists, helping track bird populations, migration patterns, and habitat health. It’s also about raising awareness of bird conservation, and celebrating the joy and wonder these species bring to our world. We’re proud to contribute to this collective effort and honored to have done so from the heart of the wild.
