The spirit of Shamwari resides in its’ name“Shamwari”, meaning “Friend” in Shona – one of the languages of the Zimbabwean people. And, as this ideology of friendship is part of who we are, it’s important to be part of the community in which we live.
With the majority of our staff being local, we believe in creating a sustainable environment in and around Shamwari Game Reserve. We’re constantly involved in improving the surrounding communities namely, Paterson and Alicedale, by supporting the schools and children of future generations.
In addition to that, Shamwari Game Reserve’s 25,000 hectares of land forms the basis of this sustainable support, which is generated from:
- 6 separate 5-star lodges
- Explorer Camp
- 3 education and rehabilitation facilities
Help Where it’s Needed
One of these primary schools in our care is the Khanya Care Centre in Paterson. The centre was started by a community member named Buyelwa Peggy Mpi. She saw the need for a safe haven for the children on her street. And, what started with just 6 children in her care has now grown to 18 children who attend on a daily basis, with seven currently living with her permanently.
The ages of the children in her care vary from 9 months to 10 years old, most of whom come from abusive and damaged homes, where poverty and substance abuse has destroyed the family structure.
A New Hope
The Khanya Care Centre is a new addition to Shamwari’s care list and we’re looking forward to working with them, in order to improve and support their cause over time.
They are in dire need of:
- basic monthly living supplies
- big facility renovations
- food
- formula
- toiletries
- nappies
- toys
We have since donated R2700 worth of groceries and food, as well as soft toys and will continue to support the Khanya Care Centre on an ongoing basis to ensure that Miss Peggy’s care centre is supplied with the best support possible by Shamwari Game Reserve!
