Outdoor Adventures to Enjoy
What would a safari getaway be without a professionally guided game drive or bush walk? Included in your stay is two, 3-4 hour long game drives per day – one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Both drives include refreshment stops: a coffee/tea stop during the morning drive and a sundowner stop during the afternoon.
Shamwari’s skilled rangers and guides ensure that guests enjoy memorable interactions with the local wildlife. Experience the Eastern Cape’s diverse fauna and flora like never before in a way that informs and educates while remaining respectful.
Should you have a specific area of interest, please feel free to inform your designated guide about it before setting off on your game drive or walking safari. Your guide will then do their best to include it in your experience, if at all possible.

Conservation up Close
Conserving a vanishing way of life is one of the main focuses at Shamwari Private Game Reserve. This is, without a doubt, another (often overlooked) reason why Shamwari is considered one of the best holiday destinations in South Africa. During your stay at Bayethe, you’ll have the chance to visit two of the reserve’s conservation centres. The first being the Shamwari Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre and the second being our Born Free Big Cat Sanctuary.
At the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, a dedicated veterinary team cares for and rehabilitates injured, sick, abandoned, and orphaned wildlife. Once these animals are completely healed and rehabilitated, they are returned to the wild – where they belong. Upon arrival at the centre, you’ll be met by a team member. They will show you around the facilities and explain more about the good work done here.
As part of a collaboration with the Born Free Foundation, Shamwari established its own on-reserve Born-Free Big Cat Sanctuary. Here, you’ll gain valuable insights into the plight of wild cats from around the world. You’ll learn how they’re often held captive, living a confined and impoverished life. The Born Free Big Cat Sanctuary is home to several leopards and lions, rescued from these unfortunate circumstances. A visit to the sanctuary is a must, enlightening all guests who walk through the doors.
