Protecting Indigenous Plantlife
DID YOU KNOW: Invasive plants reduce biodiversity, limit food availability for wildlife, and increase the risk of wildfires.
One of our ongoing challenges, especially in a drought prone region, is controlling alien vegetation. Non-native plants compete with indigenous flora, depleting water resources and altering soil composition and nutrients. Removing this type of vegetation is vital for the long term health of the reserve.
Threats of Unchecked Alien Vegetation:
- Corrupted natural ecosystems
- Depleted water resources for native flora
- Wildlife water shortages
- Soil degradation
- Increased fire risks
The Shamwari Foundation Combats Alien Vegetation by:
- Manual removal of existing invasive plants
- Control of regrowth and re-germination of invasive plants
- Vegetation and plant identification monitoring
