Darren – Shamwari Game Ranger Q&A

“If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” – Steve Jobs

Favourite animal:

Leopard.

It’s the most elusive big cat and its always a challenge to find them.

Favourite animal in a sighting:

Cheetah.

They’re very graceful and an exquisite animal, great to photograph. They usually show off.

Most exciting encounter while on game drive:

I was guiding out of Long Lee Manor and my colleague, Ranger Mino, and I were in a cheetah sighting. He was stalking a herd of springbok close to the vehicle and unexpectedly the springbuck came towards him, without noticing the cheetah.

He had eyed out his target, who was a large dominant member of the group. He ran towards them and tripped the animal, going for its throat. He then jumped on top of it and killed it instantly. Both myself and my guests as well as Ranger Mino’s guests were in awe of what had just unfolded right before our eyes. We left and headed for our sundowners stop while talking about the amazing sighting.
