You might remember that we released the three caracals at Shamwari’s animal rehab centre a while ago? Unfortunately, the release was unsuccessful as they were more interested in the baby antelope we had at the centre at the time than hunting for themselves. So we thought it best to keep them for the winter and try again.
The animal rehabilitation staff got them used to eating natural prey such as guineafowl, hares, and rodents. We finally released them on the quiet part of the reserve recently, leaving them with one final meal. They will be monitored regularly to see how they cope, but they seemed happy when we left and it was a great feeling to see them in their natural habitat.
