Orphaned Rhino Update:

It has been just over a year since we took three orphaned rhinos into our care at our Animal Rehabilitation Centre. Their journey and progress has been inspiring to say the least! These three orphans have surpassed our expectations and become three gorgeous individuals. They can hardly be called ‘little’ anymore.

Orphaned Rhino

Nunu, Winston and Chip have shown tremendous progress and continue to grow stronger each day. They are currently being weaned off their milk as we hope to release them back into the wild and send them back to their reserves by the beginning of spring.

We have noticed that they have been grazing a lot more by themselves and a lot of their natural behavioural instincts have kicked in. This is exactly what we want to see as they will be on their own when released into the wild and will have to defend for themselves.

Meet Amara:

The latest bundle of joy to arrive at the Shamwari Rehab Centre is a 3-month-old baby elephant. Amara was extremely malnourished when she arrived 3 weeks ago and the team has had a tough time getting her through this period.

We are very happy to say that she is much stronger and in a better state of health, although she is still not out of the woods yet. Many exciting times ahead for us here at the Shamwari Rehab Centre!
